About Me:
Barbara Hruda, LCSW – BHA Social Worker Delaware
I view the first session as a time for both the client and clinician to evaluate whether we are a “good fit”. During this session, my job is both to elicit enough information from the client to determine whether my expertise fits what they want to achieve, and to give the client enough of a sample of how “I do therapy” so they can determine their comfort level with me and my style. I am an “active” therapist who is quite empathic and supportive/challenging. I refer for medication evaluations when appropriate and although I very much believe in experiencing necessary pain, I prefer to work quickly to avoid that which is unnecessary. Although it is unusual for a new client to decide not to work with me, I always stress that they have that option and at the session’s end, summarize how I would work with them and ask whether they want to continue. I have been trained in the psychodynamic, Gestalt, cognitive-behavioral, etc. techniques but always look at the individual and assess how best their individual process can be facilitated, and thus am eclectic. I have a multidisciplinary background which (often) can enhance the therapeutic process.
